"Community > Everything..." 🏁 On Any Sundays

"The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention."

― Oscar Wilde

The legend states, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization. The student expected an answer involving clay pots, tools for hunting, religious artifacts, etc...

But no. Mead said that the first evidence of civilization was a 15,000-year-old femur that had been broken and then healed.

She explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, you cannot get to the river to drink or hunt for food. No creature survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal. Instead, you become something else’s meal.

A broken femur that has healed is evidence that another person has taken time to stay with the fallen, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety, and has tended them through recovery.

According to Mead, helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization begins.

Is there anyone you can think of that’s helped you get through a challenging time?

Is there anyone you can think of that’s going through a challenging time who you can help right now?
